Thus shall we see, and triumph in the fight,
While malice frets, and fumes, and gnaws her chains,
America shall blast her fiercest foes!
Out-brave the dismal shocks of bloody war!
And in unrival'd pomp resplendent rise,
And shine sole Empress of the Western World!
[Part of an address to the First and Second Virginia
brigades, at the Feu de Joye at Valley Forge, by the Rev.
John Hurt, Chaplain to the Second Brigade, Trenton,
September 9.]
